FAQs

What is Pelvic Physical Therapy (Pelvic PT)?

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized area of physical therapy that focuses primarily on the function of the pelvic region of the body. We assess the relationships between the nerves, muscles, joints, ligaments, bones, and blood supply associated with your pelvic issues. We are then able to develop a personalized plan of care to address the issues that we find so that you get real and lasting results! Common treatments we use include soft tissue mobilization, myofascial release, scar mobilization, trigger point release, manual and visual biofeedback training, exercise prescription, breathwork, activity modifications, and tons of education!

Do you take my insurance?

We are an “out-of-network” provider, which means that we have the freedom to adequately address your needs without the limitations that insurance plans dictate. Many insurance plans have out-of-network benefits that you can use towards your pelvic health investment. Per request, a superbill can be provided to you that you can then provide to your insurance for reimbursement.

How can I pay for my physical therapy appointments?

We accept all the following forms of payment at this time: Credit/Debit, and HSA/FSA accounts.

How long is each visit?

Each visit includes 50-60 minutes of 1 on 1 care with your therapist.

What should I expect from my first visit in Pelvic PT?

During your first visit, you and your therapist will talk about your pelvic problems and your medical history. Then, the therapist will perform a physical assessment of your body so that deficits can be identified and the best exercises for home can be prescribed. For in-person visits, the therapist may perform an internal assessment of the pelvic floor, but this will be discussed in detail by your therapist prior to your consensual participation.  At the end of your visit, you and your therapist will decide on a personalized plan of care to address your problems and achieve your goals.

What happens in a pelvic floor internal exam?

During a pelvic floor internal exam, you therapist will insert a gloved and lubricated finger into the vagina or rectum to directly assess the muscles deep in the pelvis. This assessment helps your therapist gain a better understanding of how your pelvic muscles are impacting your function and pain. Participation in a pelvic floor internal exam is voluntary and will be discussed in detail by your therapist if you do choose to participate.

Can I still come to my scheduled session if I am on my period?

Absolutely! You can still participate pelvic health evaluations and treatment sessions while you are on your period. Internal assessments and treatments may be deferred for that session and your therapist may focus on more external means of treatment.

How long will I have to be in pelvic PT? How many visits will it take to get better?

True healing requires consistency and time. A significant reduction in pain is usually experienced within 6 weeks, and strength gains start to present within 8-12 weeks. A 12-week plan of care utilizing our signature 3-phase treatment method ensures that you get all of your problems adequately addressed for results that last! At the end of your initial visit, your therapist will be able to give you a better estimation for how long or how many sessions will be needed to achieve your goals.

How long will my results last?

True, lasting change requires a lifestyle change. Your therapist will teach you how to integrate what you have learned into your daily life so that you can manage your pelvic health well on your own.

Is it common for patients to return for additional pelvic health services after completing a full course of treatment?

By utilizing our signature 3-phase treatment method our patients don’t usually come back with the same issues that they had before. It is important to realize that your body is constantly changing and life will bring new challenges for you to conquer. Your therapist is available to help you navigate these challenges as they come. These challenges can include: menopause, pregnancy, surgery, new life stressors, new symptoms, etc. Outside of the unfamiliar, your therapist will have given you enough tools and techniques to be able to manage your familiar symptoms well on your own.
